ABORTION 2

Abortion

Part 1: Ethial Question

Does the legality of abortion tell us anything about its morality or vice versa?

Part 2: Introduction

Abortion has become one of the most argued and researched topic on any ethical

framework. The debate centers on the morality and the legality of terminating pregnancy before

the nine months. The main discussion centers on whether the fetus is a ‘human being ‘or not. It is

wrong to kill innocent human beings, foetus is innocent and therefore it is wrong to kill them.

(Mary Warren ,1973). The foetus being terminated is the victim and its opinion is not solicited

when one decides to procure an abortion. The religious people have taken a ‘pro-life’ side of the

debate arguing that life begins at conception and termination of it should be dealt with as murder.

However, the other side of the debate argues that any person has a right to do as they please with

their body. In addition, they argue that the mother has no ethical responsibility towards the

unborn child; ‘Pro- choice’(Thompson,2015).

Part 3: Position Statement

Legally, abortion remains prohibited in most countries. However, a lot of questions arise from

this stand.

Part 4: Reasoning Support of Your Statement

If the growth of the foetus risks the health of the mother, should the medical practioner

save the mother or the baby? If the baby is likely to have serious physical handicaps as observed

during is growth in the womb, should it be allowed to come to the world just to suffer? What if

this is just a discussion topic

the pregnancy is as a result of rape or incest, should it be allowed to develop even as it posed

mental health risk to the mother? These are questions and main issues that fuel the debate

surrounding the ethicality of abortion.

Part 5: Opposing Position Statement

Abortion may be procured under given medical conditions but it should never be passed

as morally ethical decision because it has far reaching consequences.

Part 6: Reasons in Support of the Opposing Position

Abortion takes away the free will of a human being to exist. The mother may suffer severe

mental torture due to the decision to procure abortion. Pregnancy results from having

unprotected sex. To question the ethics of abortion means to question the ethics of sex.

‘Pro-Choice’ is the greatest argument in support of abortion because it argues that

abortion is every pregnant woman’s choice. In Roe Vs Wade of 1973, abortion was legalized in

the first trimester of the pregnancy. The court ruled to protect the privacy of the woman to have

an abortion. The court however did rule on the adherence to the country’s laws. The body of a

woman is hers and whatever she decides to do with it is upon her. Forcing women to carry

pregnancies to term is unfair since not all have the ability to. In addition to that, is it ethical for

one to bring forth a child that is not wanted? Women that choose to abort may be making the

most ethical choice towards the unborn foetus. If we force women to carry the pregnancy to term

choice, but this needs to be

reworded. [Kent Burstein]
