As we discussed in module 2, there are eight essential steps or phases to effective consultancy. When you consider the role of change agent one of the important factors is data collection and inquiry.  There must be a strategy or forecast as to what questions will be asked to gain an understanding of the day in the life internally and externally of the client.   The questions assist in building a platform to work from to address certain challenges that will need to be rectified during the implementation phase.

As the consultant begin to peel the layers of skin back of the organization they must also decide in which capacity they will serve.  According to Block (2013) there are common roles that consultants assume, which are the Expert, a Pair of hands and lastly, the Collaborator.

The Expert which is described as the individual that dives in and assist in rectifying a challenge and then removes themselves, the Pair of hands is described as a consultant that takes the lead of the client and does not deviate even if better judgement suggest otherwise and lastly, the collaborator much like a marriage, partners with the client throughout the entire process (Expert, Pair of Hands, or Collaborator, 2013).

When you consider the level of accountability associated with the three different roles, the expert role I would suggest has the least amount of accountability depending on the situation.  The expert can be in the position to provide information and suggestions of implementations to rectify or improve a situation but does not have to stay around through the change process.

It is in my opinion that the collaborative role is where I would be most efficient.   This role affords the consultant to ensure that suggestion of changes to be implemented are aligned and functional because they have had the input of the actual teams that will navigate the change process. The Collaborative role also fosters an environment to build rapport between you and the client.  It is also suggested that this role lends way to fresh perspectives.  Where the client will benefit from my fresh eyes and perspective on the situation, as a collaborative consultant I can benefit from the transfer of knowledge of trends, functionality and people.  In addition, this work relationship also lends way to typically having a combined synonymous level of commitment (Expert, Pair of Hands, or Collaborative, 2013).
