Purpose: To connect the history of social work and social work policy with the development of the social work profession understanding instrumental persons that contributed to both. Making these connections will allow for the identification and understanding of the recurring themes embedded in historical and current social welfare policies. The Assignment: Historical figures will be assigned to each of you on Moodle by 6 pm on July 6 (after the last date to add). The assignment is due July 15. This is not a group project even though some of you may be assigned the same historical figure. This is a two part assignment—1) the paper 2) the posting (don`t compete this). The paper is your academic work on your historical figure that you will turn into the drop box using Turnitin (on Moodle). The posting is 5 sentences that will give your classmates a “snapshot” of your assigned historical figure. The Paper. This is an academic piece of work written in APA format. • Use a minimum of 3 academic sources (no Wikipedia, no magazines, and not the Trattner book). These include peer-reviewed journal articles, other books and government data. • Use the APA format. If you are not familiar with this, purchase the manual. • 1 Cover page, 2 pages of content, 1 reference page; you need to be brief, comprehensive and accurate. No abstract. Double spaced using 12 point font. • The content of the paper will include following: o A general overview of the context in which the person lived and worked. o The values that informed their work and motivated them. o The biggest contribution (if the figure had many) to social welfare policy and/or the social work profession. (What was this person known for as it relates to social work). This is where your accurateness and your research will come into play. o At least three academic references. • Turned into Moodle through Turnitin drop box. You will not be able to do this five minutes before the deadline so plan accordingly. The Posting. Each student will post no more than 5 sentences on the Discussion Board posting thread for all class members to view. The Discussion Board will be set up with a thread for each historical figure. You will find your historical figure, click on the figure’s name, and add your post, which will give the reader a snapshot of your figure’s importance to the profession. Exam 2 will cover historical figures so it is imperative that your post be accurate as your classmates may study from this. Grading Criteria Content & Comprehensiveness • Accurately depict the historical figure • Covers the main contributions effectively (did you discuss the most relevant contribution) • A general overview of the context in which the person lived and worked. • The values that informed their work and motivated them. • The figures’ contribution to social welfare policy and/or the social work profession. 4 Writing Style/Format • Grammar, spelling, punctuation, following directions, APA format 4 Posting • Post made to discussion board • Was it accurate for your classmates to learn about your figure? 2 TOTAL 10 I will complete the posting.
