Chapter 11 Rothaermel Text (Minimum of 600 words)

1. Why is it important for an organization to have alignment between its strategy and structure? (Make sure you peruse the journal articles on strategy/structure within the Endnotes before completing this question.)

2. The chapter describes the role of culture in the successful implementation of strategy. Consider an employment experience of your own or of someone you have observed closely (e.g., a family member).

a. Describe to the best of your ability the values, norms, and artifacts of the organization. What was the socialization process of embedding the culture?

b. Do you consider this to be an example of an effective culture for contributing to the organization’s competitive advantage? Why or why not?

Chapter 12 Rothaermel Text (Minimum of 600 words)

1. How can a top management team lower the chances that key managers will pursue their own self-interests at the expense of stockholders? At the expense of the employees? At the expense of other key stakeholders?

2. The Business Roundtable has recommended that the CEO should not also serve as the chairman of the board.

a. Discuss the disadvantages for building a sustainable competitive advantage if the two positions are held by one person.

b. What are the disadvantages for stakeholder management?

c. Are there situations where it would be advantageous to have one person in both positions?
