World Literature 1

TSU | Spring 2018 | Dr. Shafer | ENGL 2320: World Lit II | Week 3 Thu, Feb 1 | Homework Homework: Written response to Introductions in Longman Textbooks Based on your reading of the introductions in all three of the volumes of The Longman Anthology of World Literature textbooks:

 Vol D: The Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries (pages 1-11)  Vol E: The Nineteenth Century (1-18)  Vol F: The Twentieth Century (1-20)

write a well-developed paragraph in response to each of the following questions (at least one paragraph per question):

1) Based on information found in the introduction in Vol D: The Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries, what is your understanding of that historical period? Make (at least) three separate points as part of your response. Explain and include examples where useful.

2) Based on information found in the introduction in Vol E: The Nineteenth Century (1-18) what is your understanding of that historical period? Make (at least) three separate points as part of your response. Explain and include examples where useful.

3) Based on information found in the introduction in Vol F: The Twentieth Century (1-20) what is your understanding of that historical period? Make (at least) three separate points as part of your response. Explain and include examples where useful.

4) Choose one piece of artwork in ANY of the three vols that you have a positive personal response to. Explain what your personal response is and why you believe you had this particular positive response. You can discuss colors, shapes, sizes, content, lines, whatever you notice. Just make sure to make a clear connection between the artwork in question and your response to it. You do not have to be an art major to be able to write about art.

5) Choose one piece of artwork in ANY of the three vols that you have a negative personal reaction to. Explain what your personal reaction is and why you believe you had this particular negative reaction. You can discuss colors, shapes, sizes, content, lines, whatever you notice. Just make sure to make a clear connection between the artwork in question and your reaction to it.

Additional Notes

 Please answer each question/prompt as completely as you can.  Remember to follow the 1) CLAIM, 2) EVIDENCE, 3) EXPLANATION pattern (we will discuss this in

class).  Each question needs to be answered in separate—but well developed—paragraphs. Number each answer

(to indicate which question you are answering).  Although I am NOT asking you to research your answers, if you EVER use outside sources (books,

magazines, web sites, etc.) you MUST give credit (in MLA form). Simply google: OWL MLA for lots of free information and examples.

 Plagiarized responses will receive no credit and cannot be redone.  Your writing needs to be as “academically correct” as possible. All this means is to pay attention to your

language choices, sentence patterns, transition words/phrases, paragraph structures, etc. I fully admit that I care more about the quality of your ideas, but remember that you are always being judged by society (as unfair as this is) on your writing skills, so you need to work on expressing yourself as effectively as possible.

 The work MUST be completed in a digital document (Word document, NOT an apple file or a pdf).  This assignment is due in the Week 3 Wed, Jan 31 Homework dropbox on eLearn by 11:59pm on Tue,

Feb 6.  This is the only way to receive credit. Simply bringing a hardcopy to class will not count for credit.
